Description of Work
The Environmental Program Consultant position provides pollution prevention technical assistance to businesses, industries, and institutions across the state. The position works with Division management, Sections, and other key DEQ programs to deliver technical project delivery, including clean energy assessments, water efficiency audits, solid waste reduction, pollution prevention, compliance assistance, and other environmental performance improvement recommendations in line and in support of agency program objectives.
The position will work closely with other section staff to ensure the success of DEQ’s Environmental Stewardship Initiative (ESI) program. This position will lead initiatives and/or will work closely with other team members to accomplish program goals. This position must possess the ability to work independently and as part of a team to gather information, manage tasks and provide solutions to ESI members and other DEACS' clients. This position must be comfortable with public speaking and have good time management and interpersonal skills.
Travel to assigned client sites or events throughout the state will be required as part of the program's outreach and marketing efforts. Frequency of travel is partly based on need but may be 10-15% of the time monthly on average. This position meets with clients or attends events; therefore, a valid Driver's License is required.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide consultative services and technical assistance to ESI members on program requirements, membership advancement, environmental regulations, and pollution prevention strategies.
Track and manage ESI program data; develop program reports; and contribute to program improvement initiatives.
Assist with program marketing and outreach efforts; support program participation at meetings, conferences, and workshops; and provide presentations.
Provide technical assistance, auditing, and training on environmental management systems.
Lead and/or facilitate ESI networking or training events.
Respond to customer inquiries and assist with initiatives such as the DEQ customer service hotline.

Recruitment Range: $63,927.00 - $88,855.00

This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.
Minimum Education and Experience

Master's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
